 Course Title: Sankofa- Tools for Providing for Culturally Competent Service Delivery for African Diaspora

Course Description:

 

This course examines the unique experience of African American families in American society.  The rich heritage and legacy of the African American population will be explored from a cultural, historical, psychological, and sociopolitical perspective. The course will examine the institution of slavery, and its structural impact on contemporary Black culture and family life.  Special emphasis will be given to Afrocentric prevention treatment and theories as a tool to develop knowledge regarding the dynamics of family functioning.  The course is structured to permit open and critical reflection grounded in scholarly readings, case studies and personal experience.

 

Learning Objectives:

 

1. The participants will demonstrate knowledge about the unique culture and history of African Origin families.

2. The participants will demonstrate knowledge about the core components of Cultural Competency and the implications for service delivery for African Origin People.

3. The participants will demonstrate knowledge about the multiple systemic dynamics that impacts the contemporary African American family and community.

  • Lunch is available for $8.00 through this site, or you may bring your own lunch, or buy lunch outside our offices. Lunch is to be held from 12pm-1pm. You may stay here at this time if you would like to eat with colleagues or just to network!
  • In case of cancellations or changes, attendees will be notified by email if possible. A message will also be left at MLI (203-691-1486) by 7 am on the day of the event.

*Refunds for the luncheon will not be made past 5 days prior to event. Refunds prior to this date will be subject to a $1.00 fee.

ATTENTION PREVENTION PROVIDERS:  This is a training open to all, but especially for DMHAS funded prevention providers, SPF-SIG/BP and PFS grantees and their members, that should help you apply theory to your SPF-SIG/BP/PFS practice and steps if you are in these categories. If you are not a DMHAS-Funded prevention program provider nor receive these particular program/ grant funds, you are still welcome to attend as it will be relevant to your own work.
